Lurgan Harry the branch man tries it again

A Lurgan based RUC man, going under the name of `Harry' and who is renowned as a `serial recruiter' attempted last Wednesday 24 to recruit a 37 year old man from the Taghnevan estate in the town as an informer.

Joe Griffin was walking towards the town centre at about 10.30am when `Harry' and a second branchman accosted him at a place known locally as the `Grove'.

Addressing the man by his first name the branchmen told him they believed he was, `stuck for money and could be doing with a few quid'.

Said Joe, ``they cornered me at the `hole in the wall' leading out of the `Grove' and boxed me in and I couldn't get away and tried to get me into the nearby Old Peoples' Home which is very isolated. They suggested we go for a spin and I was in a state of shock and told them I would meet them''.

The RUC men told Joe they would pick him up at 1pm at the Portadown Road which is an isolated road between Lurgan and Craigavon.

Luckily at this point Joe's brother-in-law past by and suspecting something was amiss went back. At this the RUC left''.

According to Sinn Fein councillor for the area, Francie Murray, ``it seems the RUC knew this man's movements and waited until they got him on his own. The only time Joe Griffin would walk up through the `hole in the wall' is on a Wednesday'', said Murray.

Mr Griffin has since seen his solicitor to lodge a complaint.
