Sackville Six raise low pay
BY MICHAEL PIERSE
Six members of Sinn Féin Youth's Direct Action Committee were
arrested last Friday at Dublin's May Day march.
The Sackville Six decided mischievously to unveil a drop banner
from the roof-top of a large building at the corner of Sackville
Place and O'Connell Street. ``£5 Per Hour Minimum Wage Now! - SFY''
was the message that earned the group their acclaim as the
Minimum Wage Martyrs., with their cries from above of ``May-day,
workers-pay''.
However, there was no counting on the ``blue flu'' to save the day
as eight Gardaí and four Garda vehicles braved the 24-hour bug
and soldiered on past the picket-lines, not to mention O'Connell
Street's lines of heroin dealers, to arrest the obvious dangers
to society that were the Minimum Wage Martyrs. The Sackville
Street Six, now temporarily declined to the Sackville Street
Five, as one member managed to abscond (to be featured on
Crimeline), were apprehended on descent from the building.
The Garda who seemed to be in command crossed his arms and with a
bovine, self-satisfied grin blurted ``well, what have we here...a
shower a' clowns.''
Inside the station one Garda commented to me, as I had not time
to catch up on the latest news, ``Did ya hear that one of yer
friends was shot down in Wickla today... a terrorist.'' Other Gardaí
chuckled excitedly about this shoot-to-kill incident.
One of the lads arrested, a 16 year-old from Dublin, was highly
amused at the simplicity of their uniquely churlish sense of
humour. A member of the force initiated a continuous campaign of
looking in the cell door and whispering absurdly
``Tiocfaidh...tiocfaidh......tiocfaidh ár lá.'' They were particularly
annoyed that we found this behaviour funnier than they did.
The Sackville Five were subsequently released from custody but
were adamant that this imprisonment would not deter them from
future direct action in pursuit of their convictions.
