A new era for human rights

The Lower Ormeau Concerned Community (LOCC) are holding a conference focusing on the interconnected issues of human rights and parades in light of the Good Friday document. The conference is to be held in Shaftesbury Recreation centre on Saturday 20 June from 11am.

The morning session of the conference will be chaired by Majella McCloskey, a community activist, and speakers will include Sinn Fein's Gerry Kelly, 26 counties Fianna Fail TD Conor Lenihan and Alex Attwood of the SDLP. It will deal with the human rights agenda in the broadest possible sense.

Michael Goodman of the LOCC said ``This conference has been planned for some time but now seems the best time to hold it as a more accessible forum for the whole community to debate these issues.''

The afternoon season will explore the marching season in relation to the Belfast document and will be chaired by the journalist Anne Cadwallader.

Speakers for this section will include civil rights activist and former MP, Bernadette McAliskey and Brendan MacCionnaith of the Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition.
