Roisin McAliskey is once again refused bail. The lawyers
representing the German government oppose bail but the German
embassy later denies that their government is opposed to bail
Friday 14 February
Relatives of the Bloody Sunday victims along with John Hume
present evidence to Patrick Mayhew which was not considered by
the Widgery Tribunal. Mayhew says he will consider it carefully.
Saturday 15 February
Patrick Mayhew rejects calls for an apology for the Bloody Sunday
murders because, he says, that would be an admission of ``criminal
wrongdoing''.
In Bilbao in the Basque Country, police open fire with live
rounds into a 30,000 strong crowd protesting against the arrests
of the leaders of Herri Batasuna. Three people are seriously
injured.
Monday 17 February
The British Government survives a censure vote on BSE after a
number of concessions to Ulster Unionists, whose abstentions
secure John Major's survival.
ETA executes a policeman in Bilbao in the Basque Country.
Tuesday 18 February
Former RUC Chief Constable Jack Hermon objects to both the
Anglo-Irish Agreement and the Downing Street Declaration and
claims the RUC did not operate a shoot-to-kill policy in the
early 1980s.
John Major refuses once again to open dialogue with Sinn Féin
Wednesday 19 February
It is reported that Chinese leader Deng Xiao Peng has died.
Dick Spring calls in the British Ambassador to express his
concern at the treatment of Roisin McAliskey
