A leading Irish revolutionary figure who was captured by the British and sentenced to be hanged, Theobald Wolfe Tone, died this week 225 years ago.

A brilliant political mind, he insisted that the union with Britain was “the scourge of the Irish nation” and that the people of Ireland “can have neither happiness nor freedom whilst that connection endures”.
