Two pipe bomb attacks took place in south and north Belfast over the past 24 hours.

The PSNI said both devices were ‘viable’.

One bomb was left on the Cliftonville Road on Wednesday morning between Old Park Avenue and Kingsmere Avenue.

It is understood the device was left at the family home of late member of the IPLO (Irish People’s Liberation Organisation), an INLA splinter group.

Another such device was found in the garden of a house in the Market area of south Belfast.

British Army disposal teams were involved in defusing both devices.

No organisation has claimed responsibility for either incident.

After visiting the scene of a bomb alert in the Market area, Sinn Fein Assembly member Alex Maskey said it was a “stupid and pointless attack”.

“It has caused unnecessary disruption and upset to many families in the run up to Christmas,” he said.

I would call on whoever is involved in these unwanted and ridiculous attacks to bring them to an end.”
