‘A race to the bottom’ - that’s how Taoiseach Bertie Ahern described the press coverage of former Fianna Fail TD Liam Lawlor’s death. Minister of Finance Brian Cowen identified an unfortunate media trend where ‘things don’t have to be accurate all the time’ and spoke of ‘basic decency being transgressed’.
