Sinn Féin stalwart resigns due to ill health
SINN FÉIN NATIONAL CHAIRPERSON Mitchel McLaughlin has paid tribute to the work of North Belfast councillor
Gerard Brophy who has been forced to resign due to ill health.
Borphy's record locally was one of hard work and commitment, he said. ``He was a
tireless worker who stood up for his constituents in north Belfast. He was always available and has contributed
greatly to the north Belfast community.''
Fellow North Belfast representative Gerry Kelly added that, particularly in the area of fighting discrimination and
for the housing rights of people in north Belfast, Gerard has been a persistent and highly effective thorn in the side of
the housing authorities.''
``I want to personally thank Gerard for his contribution to both the north Belfast community and to Sinn Féin and
pay tribute to his record of work. He will be sorely missed and I wish him well.''
Brophy has formally handed in resignation papers to Belfast City Council and Sinn Féin will seek to co-opt another
party member to replace Mr Brophy at a selection convention to be held in the coming days.
