IRA Volunteer commemorated at Shannonvale
IRA Volunteer Tim Whooley, a Company Vice Captain in the 3rd
West Cork Brigade, who died as a result of an accidental shooting
near Shannonvale on 27 March 1921, was remembered at the spot
where he died in a simple commemoration organised by Clonakilty
Sinn Féin Cumann last Sunday. Among those who attended
were Tim and Julia Whooley, nephew and niece of the 21-year-old
republican, who laid the wreath during the ceremony.
Cathaoirleach Paul Hayes, said the Clonakilty SF Cumann had
taken a decision a few months ago to repair and redecorate the
iron memorial crosses to fallen Volunteers who died in the
locality in the 1920s period, and that it is only right and
fitting that they be remembered. Last Sunday's was the first in a
series of such ceremonies at these restored crosses over the
coming 12 months.
