Successful Irish summer school in Newry

On Friday 25 July the O'Donovan Rossa Cultural Society in Newry started its weekend summer school with a trip to the Ulster/American Folk Park in Omagh. The entire group, comprising children and adults, found the visit to be a thoroughly enjoyable and very informative experience. The next day language, music and dance workshops were held in Crossmaglen followed by a small fireside céilí and Irish language quiz in Newry. Another well attended event was the mountain walk through Rostrevor.

Committee member Geraldine McAteer said "the O'Donovan Rossa Cultural Society, Newry was set up to promote Irish culture in this area through the medium of Irish language, music, song and dance.

"This is the fourth such event the Rossas have organised in as many years and each year it continues to grow in popularity. In September we will be hosting a weekend of events in Newry and south Armagh to commemorate the death of Robert Emmet. These will include a lecture on the life and times of Robert Emmet and workshops on Irish music and dance followed by the planting of trees in the area. Everyone is welcome to come along and participate.

"Hopefully we can increase the duration of events next year."
