Tribute to Paddy Douglas
Paying tribute to Civil Rights veteran Paddy Douglas, who has died, West Tyrone Sinn Féin MP Pat Doherty extended his sympathy to his immediate family and extended family circle in the Castlederg area.
"Paddy was a committed Civil Rights activist," said Doherty. "As the infamous image of Paddy being batoned by the RUC at Duke Street was flashed around the world, it heralded a watershed in the course of Irish history.
"This image encapsulated all that was wrong with the northern state and ensured that after this day things would never be the same again.
"All people who value civil rights and justice will be saddened at the news of Paddy's death."
