Council backs Fullerton family's fight for truth

A motion to Buncrana Urban District Council to have the terms of reference for the Morris Tribunal widened to include the case of Sinn Féin Councillor Eddie Fullerton was passed unanimously last week. The decision has been greeted with delight by Eddie's family and friends.

The motion, put by Sinn Féin Councillor Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, followed the failure to achieve the same objective in the Dáil, when the government refused to widen the scope of the Tribunal, which is investigating complaints against some gardaí in Donegal. Terms of reference for the Tribunal include allegations surrounding the arrest and treatment of persons in connection with the death of Richie Barron, and allegations of harassment of the McBrearty family.

Eddie Fullerton was murdered on the 25 May 1991. The detailed intelligence involved in planning his death once more raised the spectre of cross-border, British sponsored terror.

Eddie's son, Albert, says the family is calling for other councils to take on the same motion, and hopes for similar success.

"This happened 12 years ago, and we are still being blocked at every turn to see justice done," Albert says. "Hopefully, this motion will see the start of a new chapter in this story."
