Ardee remembers brave Volunteers
The O'Carroll/Tierney Sinn Féin Cumann in Mid-Louth held a hugely successful commemoration for the two Volunteers after which it is named last Sunday, 24 November.
The commemoration marked the 82nd anniversary of the killings of Sean O'Carroll and Patrick Tierney at the hands of the Black and Tans.
A large crowd, led by a colour party and four bands, marched from the Fair Green in Ardee, to the monument remembering the two Volunteers on the Drogheda Road. There, proceedings were chaired by Pearse McGeough, and Michelle Gildernew, MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, was the main speaker.
Gildernew praised the courage and commitment of the two Volunteers and others like them who, she said, were an inspiration to succeeding generations of republicans, including the 1981 hunger strikers.
Wreaths were laid and Donal Duffy played a lament on the pipes before a stirring rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann was given by the Longstone pipe band.
