Lurgan pays moving tribute to Sheena Campbell

In a moving tribute on the tenth anniversary of her death, Sinn Féin activists from all across the Six Counties gathered recently in the Taghnevan Community Centre in Lurgan to remember Sheena Campbell.

Assassinated in a Belfast hotel on 16 October 1992 by a pro-British death squad, Sheena was the architect behind Sinn Féin's developing Torrent electoral strategy.

A commemorative booklet, A Tribute to Sheena Campbell, was launched on the night and Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams presented copies to Sheena's mother and father, Jean and Patsy, Sheena's son Caolán, and Sheena's partner, Brendan Curran.

In the booklet Caolán movingly remembers his mother. He writes: "Even though I am proud of her and of what she achieved, I didn't know Sheena Campbell the political intellectual. The woman I knew was far more important. She was my mummy, who fussed over me in the mornings making sure I went off to school presentable, who cuddled up on the settee with me to watch television, who bought me wee secret treats and who shared special confidences with me."

Among those who spoke in honour of Sheena on the night were Martina Anderson and Dara O'Hagan, Jim McAllister, and Gerry Adams.
