TDs remember Dublin Volunteer

New Sinn Féin's TDs Aengus Ó Snodaigh and Sean Crowe joined Councillor Dessie Ellis in addressing the commemoration for Martin Doherty last Sunday, 26 May, in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

Many of the people attending last Sunday's commemoration had been in the crowd that evening, eight years ago, at the Widow Scallan's pub in Pearse Street, when Martin Doherty, an IRA Volunteer from Finglas, was shot as he removed the bomb that had been planted below the function room.

"Martin was a revolutionary, though he would have laughed at you for saying so, because he wanted to bring about that social economic change in a new and unified Ireland," sais Seán Crowe.

"I remember Doco from the '80s at a time when the whole armoury of the British state was employed against us," said Ó Snodaigh. "Even in these hard times, Doco, a man of action, enjoyed life. I remember the thousands of people that came to his funeral.

"The ultimate tribute to Doco will be a united socialist Ireland, towards which we took yet another small step last week with the election results."
