Great expectations in Sligo

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew, despite being over eight months pregnant, took time to canvass in Sligo City Centre during the last week with the former Mayor of Sligo, Councillor Seán MacManus, the Sinn Féin candidate in Sligo/Leitrim.

Gildernew, who was elected MP for the neighbouring constituency of Fermanagh/South Tyrone last May, is expecting her first child within a matter of weeks. She is pictured canvassing in a city centre arcade with MacManus, where she joked, "I'll take a chance of my child being born in Sligo, if it helps Seán get elected!"

Letterkenny entertains Gildernew

On Thursday 21 February, Michelle visited a number of projects and groups in the Donegal North-East constituency with the candidate for the area, Padraig MacLochlainn. She visited the Letterkenny Institute of Technology on Thursday morning to meet with members of the LYIT Sinn Féin cumann and also with other students and members of the teaching staff and the Students Union at the college.

Michelle and Padraig then visited the recently completed Letterkenny Women's Centre at Port Road and were met by Nora Newell and Eilish McArt, who talked about the resources available at the centre before giving a guided tour of the new facilities. They also visited the Abhaile Aris Centre, which services the needs of the republican ex-prisoner community in Donegal and people displaced as a result of the conflict, and the Donegal Ancestry centre in Ramelton. In the late afternoon, Michele and Padraig visited the Mevagh Resource Centre in Downings, which provides services and training for the local community, where they heard about the deprivation of the Downings and Carrigart area due to lack of adequate employment and neglect by government bodies over the years.
