Cathaoirleach i Chluain Eóis
The Annual General Meeting of Clones Town Council took place on Monday night, 17 June. Sinn Féin Councillor Pat Treanor was elected Cathaoirleach and Fianna Fáil took the Leas Cathaoirleach position.
Clones was one of the first towns in the country to accept a motion from Sinn Féin to rotate the positions of chair and vice-chair among all the party groupings.
Accepting the position of Cathaoirleach, Pat Treanor outlined some of the issues he wished to see progress on in the coming year. These include tackling the growing housing waiting list, infrastructural improvements to the town, and progress towards the reopening of the Ulster Canal.
Clones is a Host Town for the Special Summer World Olympics, hosting the Lithuanian team, and he urged people to "be at the heart of it".
Concluding, Councillor Treanor said: "Clones is on the periphery of two states and nobody knows better than the people of the town the destruction and conflict created by Partition. I intend using every opportunity to promote economic, social and political unity. We already work with Fermanagh District Council to tackle common issues and I wish to build on that. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain from progressing towards Irish unity."
