Derry wants apology from English monarch

A Sinn Féin motion to Derry City Council calling on the British Queen to apologise to the people of Derry for pinning medals on those responsible for the murders on Bloody Sunday was passed in a heated, and at times confusing debate in Derry's Guildhall last week.

The demand for an apology has been welcomed by relatives of the dead and wounded. Speaking after the Council decision, Tony Doherty, whose father Patrick was shot dead on Bloody Sunday, said: "The day after the inquiry was announced in 1998, the families demanded that the Queen withdraw any awards awarded to those responsible for Bloody Sunday. As such this move by Derry City Council is to be welcomed."
