[An Phoblacht]

IRA statement

The following statement from the leadership of the IRA was received by An Phoblacht on Wednesday, 14 August

On 29 March 1999, óglaigh na héireann accepted responsibility for the death of Danny McIlhone.

At the time of his death, Danny McIlhone, a civilian from Belfast, was being questioned by óglaigh na héireann.

Contrary to some reports, he was not suspected of being an informer. He was being questioned on suspicion of having taken weapons from an IRA dump and using them in armed robberies.

He was being questioned about these matters when he was killed in a struggle with the Volunteer who was guarding him.

Subsequently, it was established that while Danny McIlhone was involved in armed robberies in Belfast and Dublin, there was no evidence that he was using IRA weapons.
