Basque visitors tour South Armagh

On Friday 2 August Sinn Féin councillor Pat McGinn welcomed 40 visitors from the Basque country to Camlough in South Armagh. They had arrived in Ireland some days previous and had been staying in Belfast to attend Féile an Phobail. Councillor McGinn gave them a broad outline of the history of the area and this was followed by a lively question and answer session.

Orla Murphy of ógra Shinn Féin then accompanied the group around South Armagh to see for themselves the British military posts on practically every hilltop in the area. Through their interpreters, the group expressed their surprise at the scale of the British Army presence in the area. During the visit, they also stopped to view the monument at Ford's Cross, erected in memory of the ten republican prisoners who died on Hungerstrike in Long Kesh in 1981.
