Close Divis spypost campaign
Sinn Féin councillor Fra McCann has called for people to join in the campaign to have the joint British Army/PSNI spypost removed from the top of Divis Tower in West Belfast.
Councillor McCann said: "I have written to the British Minister Jane Kennedy regarding the spy post located on the top of the tower. Her response was totally condescending and negative towards this community and passed the buck to the RUC/PSNI. This shows that they will have to be forced to close this obscenity through community pressure.
"Over the last 30 years this post has been used to photograph, film and spy upon people in the community. Matt McLarnon was shot and killed from this post, loyalists shot dead Thomas 'Toddler' Hughes and Martin O'Prey in full view of this spy post. Sean Monaghan was kidnapped by loyalists outside the Tower and was later killed on the Shankill Road. The basic human rights of this area have been invaded and infringed."
A protest will take place outside the tower on Wednesday 8 May from 7pm to 7.30pm.
