Gas pipe to North West approved

The creation of an all-Ireland gas network moved a step closer last week with the announcement that the Dublin government and the Six-County executive have approved plans for a cross border pipeline that will link into Belfast, Derry and Donegal.

Sinn Féin's Mayo representative, Vincent Wood, welcomed the announcement. Woods said: ``If we take this move in conjunction with the development of a cross-border pipeline from Derry to Letterkenny, the creation of an all-Ireland gas ring main is brought much closer.

``The people who have been campaigning for this development will know that it has taken reasoned and detailed lobbying to ensure that the gas was not just piped straight to markets on the east coast.

``However, we must be cautious and ensure that we get clarification on the exact extent of the proposed extension and the timescale for its completion. The lobbying must continue.''
