DUP promotes sectarianism

Sinn Féin Fermanagh & South Tyrone Assembly member Gerry McHugh has accused the DUP of promoting sectarianism.

Speaking on Tuesday, 20 March, McHugh said: ``Today's ruling that comments from DUP leader Ian Paisley describing a party colleague and myself as `papist bigots' are unparliamentary does not go far enough.

``If we are to challenge the poison of sectarianism then we need to take the political lead in challenging behaviour that promotes sectarianism.

``The DUP find it difficult to recognise that as a Sinn Féin Assembly member I have exactly the same political mandate as any other Assembly member.

However, this does not excuse the use of sectarian labels. It is time the DUP gave political leadership and time they played their part in eradicating a culture of sectarianism.

``The DUP leader Ian Paisley through his comments is guilty of promoting sectarianism. I would urge him to play his part in challenging sectarianism and in the building of a better, more inclusive future for everyone.''
