Sligo Mayor seeks timeframe for Northwest gas pipeline
The Mayor of Sligo has called on the Dublin government to set out a clear timeframe for the construction of a pipeline to take gas from the Corrib field off the Sligo/Mayo coast into the northwest for consumers and business alike.
Sinn Féin Alderman Sean MacManus said that while the government's announcement last week that the gas network would be extended to the region was welcome, there was nothing to indicate when construction would begin or be completed, or when gas would actually be available to consumers and businesses in the region. ``There is immense scepticism in relation to the government's announcement,'' said MacManus. ``There are fears the government is merely trying to deflect criticism of its inaction on this issue from those of us who have been consistently campaigning for the benefits of the gas find to be extended to the people of the north west.''
``I am urging the government to lay out a clearly defined timetable right away to allay the fears of people in the north west, many of whom believe that the Government may be attempting to dupe them this side of a general election and that once again the northwest is to be neglected and ignored. These fears have been heightened by recent statements by some Fianna Fáil TDs who made claims about Government commitments in relation to the upgrading of the N4, which have since been proved to have had no foundation in truth whatsoever.''
