Dublin calls for implementation of Patten

Dublin City Council unanimously supported Sinn Féin's Christy Burke in calling for the full implementation of the Patten Report. It joins a dozen other local authorities, including South Dublin County Council and Cork Corporation, who have called for the full implementation of Patten. Sinn Féin Councillor Nicky Kehoe said: ``The cross-party support for the full implementation of Patten shows how widespread concern is over policing in the Six Counties. Policing is a fundamental issue affecting every people throughout Ireland. To have a lasting peace settlement it has to be sorted out.''

At the same meeting last Monday, Kehoe secured unanimous support for his resolution that Tony Paget and Dimitros Paraskevakis should be officially honoured by the City for their heroic action in leaping into the Liffey to rescue a trapped bus driver.

Fianna Fáil snub Hunger Strike proposal

Councillor Martin Hallinan failed this week in his efforts to get the backing of Youghal councillors for a memorial plaque to be erected in the town's 1798 Memorial Park to mark the 20th anniversary of the death of the republican hunger strikers. Although Fianna Fáil party councillors paid fulsome praise to the H Block hunger strikers, not one would second the Sinn Féin resolution.

Hallinan was incensed at what he described as ``the hypocrisy of these councillors.'' His proposal did not even invite the council to fund the memorial plaque.
