350 held at anti-nuclear demo
350 protestors were arrested at an anti-nuclear protest held at
the Faslane Trident submarine base at Clyde in Scotland on
Monday, 12 February.
The demonstration was one of the biggest held at the base in
recent years, with almost 1,000 protestors coming from Britain,
Ireland, Holland, Belgium and Denmark.
Of the Irish contingent, 75 students from colleges throughout the
26 Counties travelled to the event, held 30 miles from Glasgow,
under the banner of `Gluaiseacht for Social Justice', a green and
social issues umbrella group.
The protest, jointly organised by Trident Ploughshares and
Scottish CND, was backed by church leaders, politicians and
celebrities, including actors Emma Thompson and Sean Connery, who
sent messages of support.
President of the Union of Students in Ireland, Julian de Spáinn,
one of those arrested at the demonstration, stressed the
importance of the protest. ``We want to be part of the campaign to
decommission these terrorist weapons of mass destruction. As well
as that, Faslane is on Scotland's western seaboard, so it affects
Ireland.''
