Calls for Shanaghan inquiry

A weekend of remembrance organised by the Castlederg/Aghgaran Justice Committee to mark the tenth anniversary of the murder of Patrick Shanaghan attracted hundreds of local and not so local people to the Aghgaran Centre.

West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty delivered the oration at a wreathlaying ceremony on Saturday night at Shanaghan's graveside.

Speaking of Patrick's killing, Doherty said there was clear evidence of Crown force collusion. Doherty highlighted the persistent harassment and threats inflicted upon Patrick prior to the shooting.

Judge Andrew Somers, who headed a delegation from the USA, addressed a conference held at the local GAA centre together with local solicitor Karen Breslin, Paul O'Connor of the Pat Finucane Centre and Patrick's sister, Mary Bogues.

Each speaker highlighted the significance of the recent ruling by the European Court of Human Rights criticising the British government's failure to investigate fully contentious killings in the north of Ireland.

Mary Bogues described the ruling as not only a victory for her family but also for the many other families who have lost loved ones in similar circumstances. She called for a full public independent inquiry into her brother's killing.
