Labour opposition to Corpo housing criticised
Sligo Sinn Fein Comhairle Ceantair PRO, Gerry Casey, has expressed ``extreme disappointment'' at the decision of the Labour party to oppose the construction of a number of much needed Corporation houses in Sligo.
Mr Casey was speaking as Labour Alderman Declan Bree attempted to justify their attempts to block the Connaughton Road proposal.
Casey explained that ``there are currently over 500 people on Sligo Corporation's housing waiting list. Many of these families are living in overcrowded and unhealthy conditions in rented properties, often paying exorbitant rent to greedy landlords. These people are crying out for local authority houses to be built by Sligo Corporation, to reduce the ever increasing waiting list and ultimately to eradicate it altogether''.
``In recent weeks, we have seen press releases from Alderman Bree talk about tackling the housing crisis, yet at Monday night's meeting, the true face of Labour was revealed. Despite the required land in question being just over one acre in total, Alderman Bree is insistent that these houses will not be built. Like those councillors in the previous council, who attempted to prevent the construction of social housing at Ash Lane, the Labour party are intent on denying local authority housing for those in need, in order to suit their own selfish interests.
``The Labour party should hang their heads in shame over their opposition to the building of these Corporation houses, a decision that the 500-plus families on Sligo Corporation's housing waiting list will not forget too easily,'' Casey said.
