Adams' regret at death of Jack Bennett

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has expressed his regret at learning of the death in Dublin of Jack Bennett, former assistant editor of the Evening Press.

Bennett, from Raheny in Dublin, is survived by his children Owen and Helen. Adams said: ``Jack Bennett was a republican in the true tradition of the United Irishmen. From a Protestant background in the North he became a socialist and an Irish republican at an early age. He worked as a journalist in Belfast and Dublin and was a founder member of the Wolfe Tone Society in the 1960s. He was an early and influential member of the Civil Rights Movement. Jack clearly understood and often articulated the imperialist nature of the British connection and of sectarian unionism.

``Jack Bennett used his considerable intellect in debate, in journalism and in political activism to achieve `Freedom the Wolfe Tone Way', the title of a seminal essay in the literature of republicanism which he wrote.

``I extend deepest sympathy to Jack's daughter Helen and son Owen and to all his family, friends and comrades.''
