RUC officer charged

RUC officer is to be charged with assault after an incident in Derry last August 14.

The RUC man, whose name has yet to be disclosed, was caught on camera headbutting a man as the RUC moved in to seal off the town centre when sporadic trouble flared after an Apprentice Boys march.

Television crews and journalists recorded the incident ,which occurred when the RUC refused to allow the man to leave a pub and go home.

Earlier, the Bogside Residents Group led a peaceful protest to the edge of Derry city where a short rally, against the loyalist parade was held. The man at the centre of the incident was initially arrested and charged but no further action has been taken. A date for the RUC man's trial has yet to be fixed.
