Kelly again named on death list
Sinn Féin Assembly member Gerry Kelly has again been told his name is on a loyalist death list.
Kelly has been advised by the RUC that his name is among those contained on a loyalist hit list recently discovered in the Highfield area of West Belfast. Four taxi drivers from the Short Strand area were also advised to revise their personal security arrangements after being told they too were on the list.
The threat comes after two men were arrested following a weapons and ammunition find during the search of two houses in the Highfield area. Weapons, component parts of weapons and ammunition were found.
``It is clear loyalist murder gangs are intent on targeting republicans and nationalists,'' said Kelly. ``It is equally clear, from this recent discovery, that the threats are not directed exclusively at people involved in political life. Seemingly, those responsible for compiling this list are quite prepared to strike at the most vulnerable of targets.
``It is, therefore, imperative all members of the nationalist community exercise extreme vigilance in the days, weeks and months ahead.
``This is the second such list to be discovered in the Highfield area in the last few weeks. The first, which also included my own name, somehow ended up in the hands of UDP councillor Frank McCoubrey. Councillor McCoubrey has yet to explain why this list was in his possession and more importantly why he failed to inform the people named that their lives were in danger. In light of this circumstance it would be useful if councillor McCoubrey were now to spell out his position and that of his party in relation to these threats.''
