Baby escapes death
A two-month-old baby and it's parents narrowly escaped death when loyalists hurled a pipe bomb through the sitting room window of their Twinbrook home in Belfast in the early hours of Monday, 12 October. The parents and the infant were in the room when the bomb shattered the window, landed on the floor near the trio, but failed to detonate. Three other children were asleep upstairs at the time.
``The family were very shocked and frightened by the incident,'' said Sinn Féin councillor for the area Paul Butler, who said they were too distraught to talk to the media about the attack and wished to remain anonymous.
A second bomb, which struck the house of Eugene McCarthy next door, also failed to explode.
Lisburn Sinn Féin councillor Paul Butler said, ``last night's attack was carried out by loyalists. It was clearly sectarian and designed to kill an entire family of four children and their parents. This is the second attack in this area in recent months, the last one was in June. On that occasion a young family was also the target''.
Butler also rounded on the RUC, saying their comments on last night's attack were ``disgraceful.
``They deliberately misled the public by claiming they were keeping an open mind about those responsible for the attack, when it is obvious that it is part of an ongoing campaign by loyalists stretching back over the last few years.''
