Poverty in 1999 - Time for Action
Three out of every ten households in the Six Counties live on less then
£150 per week, according to statistics released this week by the `Northern
Ireland' Anti-Poverty Network.
The figures are included on the group's new poster, released last
Wednesday, 19 May, at a conference in Belfast.
The poster `Poverty in 1999 - Time for Action', highlights the extent of
poverty experienced by people in the North.
- Of the 50,000 children under 18, 37% are affected by poverty.
- Two out of every ten unemployed men have been out of work for more than
five years.
- 49,000 women workers are denied their entitlement to contributory
benefits such as sick pay and job seekers allowance because they earn under
£64 per week.
- One in five households rely on social security benefits
- Long-term unemployment in disadvantaged rural areas is 7.2% higher than
the average.
