Great Result
They did it.
62 seats - in UDCs, in town commissions, in city corporations and county
councils.
It is, make no mistake, a great achievement.
Two hundred thousand people, across this country, thought Sinn Féin the
best people to represent them in the corridors of power.
It is a major affirmation of the work of all those down the years who have
fought for the cause of justice and equality.
There is many a reason why candidates won and why they lost as well.
The polical establishment has many means by which to exclude a voice for
change, a voice for justice in our communities, not least of which is
carefully fostered apathy. Elections have made so little difference in the
past, why should they make a difference in the future?
But nobody can doubt that the great vote which Sinn Féin candidates
garnered all over the country is testament to hard, arduous, patient work,
without glamour, on the ground, amongst the people.
Work which doesn't stop.
People like Daithí Doolan, who was back on Monday fighting against the
eviction of people from their homes in Dublin.
Work to prove that the 200,000 people are right.
