Murder attack on mother and son

Just hours after loyalists claimed that they had a ``God-given right to defend our people'', a mother and her six-year-old son were targeted in a loyalist bomb attack.

The attack, which took place near Finaghy Road South in South Belfast at 12.30am on Tuesday 29 June, happened when a pipe bomb, which was pushed through the letter box, exploded inside the house. Fortunately, only the front door was damaged.

The attack took place hours after the Orange Volunteers and Red Hand Defenders issued a statement which put their ``units'' on ``full alert''. The statement said: ``We will not stand idly by and watch as our culture, heritage and religion are attacked and destroyed before our very eyes''.

Gerry Kelly, Sinn Féin Assembly member for North Belfast has called on nationalists to be ``vigilant and to stay calm'' in response to the loyalist threat.
