Paddy Mac - a tribute from a friend.
Tuesday 9 February marked the first anniversary of the death of Paddy
McManus, or Paddy Mac as we all knew him. At the time of his death
Paddy Mac was a Sinn Fein councillor representing the Oldpark area on
Belfast City Council.
It was a day that brought a lot of sadness to his family and friends
as well as his comrades in the New Lodge Sinn Fein Advice Centre.
After attending a memorial mass for Paddy in St Patrick's Church in
Donegall Street several of his friends and comrades travelled to his
grave in Maguiresbridge in County Fermanagh to pay their respects to
a man who has been sadly missed.
In Fermanagh we met up with Paddy's family and in the cemetery in
Maguiresbridge laid floral tributes at his grave.
As part of the tribute to Paddy a splendid and powerful oration was
delivered by Paddy's long time companion and comrade Joe `Hannibal'
Hayes who left those in attendance with lots to ponder as he
described, in his own unassuming way, his many years spent with Paddy
in the community as well as ``behind the wire''.
Paddy's comrades would like to thank Paddy's family in Fermanagh for
the hospitality they showed to them after the graveyard ceremony.
