Policing Commission to meet in Crossmaglen

The Policing Commission, established under the Good Friday Agreement, is to hold a public meeting in Crossmaglen, South Armagh within the next few weeks. This follows a recent visit by commission member Clifford Shearring, who stayed overnight in South Armagh at the invitation of the South Armagh Farmers and Residents Committee.

``Our group had been asked to forward a written submission on what would be acceptable to the people of South Armagh as a police force,'' said Toni Carragher of the residents committee.

``Upon receipt of the submission, Mr Shearring contacted us and arranged a meeting with our group. He flew straight from London and stayed overnight in South Armagh where he held a lengthy meeting and discussion with us,'' Ms Carragher said.

Following his meeting with SAFRC Shearring went on a tour of South Armagh and Bessbrook and saw at first hand what the Good Friday Agreement has brought to the people of South Armagh, ``which is nothing'', said Ms Carragher.

It is expected that Chris Patton, chairman of the Police Commission, will also attend with two others at the public meeting in Crossmaglen. Ideally this will give the people of South Armagh an opportunity to voice their concerns.

The date and venue of the meeting will be confirmed within the next week.
