Johnnie Lynch
The death has taken place in Camlough, Co Armagh, of lifelong
republican, Johnnie Lynch.
Born in 1912, the son of a Newry dock worker, Johnnie first
became involved with the Republican Movement in Co Monaghan in
1934. He married a Co Monaghan woman, Nora, and they had a son,
Finnion, and a daughter, Catherine. Following his wife's death
over fifty years ago, Johnnie devoted his life to his country's
struggle for independence.
He was an active participant in the 1956-62 Border campaign and
was a close comrade of the Edentubber Martyrs. Upon his release
from Crumlin Road Jail in 1959 where he had served a prison
sentence, Johnnie represented Sinn Fein with distinction in the
Westminster election of that year.
He again carried the Sinn Fein message in the 1964 election in
the constituency of Armagh where, with an unprecedented vote of
12,432, he shook the entrenched Unionist camp to its foundations.
Tirelessly carrying the republican message near and far, in 1964
Johnnie embarked on a highly successful fundraising tour of the
USA on behalf of the Republican Movement.
Up until his death in August, Johnnie was an active and respected
member of the Seamus Steele Sinn Fein Cumann in Camlough.
