Call to save community
At a public meeting in Dublin's Pearse Street last Tuesday Sinn
Fein representative for Southeast Inner City, Daithí Doolan
called on the Minister for the Environment, Noel Dempsey, to
intervene and stop the proposed development on Dublin's George's
Quay. The meeting was called by the Combined Community
Association to publicise the community's opposition to this
development. Those in attendance heard how the proposed twenty
four floor development would have a detrimental effect not only
on the immediate community but would in fact create a dangerous
precedent for the rest of Dublin.
To put this building's height in perspective, one local explained
how it would be eighty meters higher than Liberty Hall, presently
the tallest building in Dublin. While Liberty Hall is situated in
the business sector of the city this new development will be
located in a small residential area of the inner city.
Daithí Doolan claimed that the community is not against
development, ``in fact to the contrary, we are in favour of
development, development of youth centres, resource centres,
social amenities, but not development that takes away from the
community. This proposed twenty four floor private apartment
block will do nothing to alleviate the housing crisis that is
facing this city. It will only further add to the problems of
spiraling house prices and continue to put homes out of reach of
local people''.
Outlining that it is within the remit of the Minister to stop
such developments, Doolan went on to publicly call on Noel
Dempsey ``to step in and support the community by calling a halt
to this outrageous development''.
