Maureen Dineen Garvin
Maureen was born and raised in Belfast's Ardoyne . She was from a
very republican family and worked all of her life in Ireland and
in Philadelphia for the freedom of Ireland. She and her husband,
the late Phil Garvin, were active in keeping the McGarrity
commemoration in Philadelphia alive in the 1950s.
When the current phase of the struggle broke out in the sixties
Maureen was one of the first to speak at demonstrations and was
one of the original members at the organisation of Irish Northern
Aid in the Philadelphia area. She was treasurer of the Delaware
County Unit for many years and also treasurer for the
Philadelphia Defence Fund. She was an active member of Irish
Northern Aid serving on the committee until she died.
Maureen Garvin died this year on 29 May. She is sadly missed by
her family and friends in the United States and at home in
Ireland. We, her friends of the Cahalane Unit of Irish Northern
Aid, miss her presence, wisdom and wit. May we all join together
at this time and remain united, working for the dream that
Maureen strived for all her life, from when she was a teenager in
Belfast, to her dying day in Atlantic City, an Ireland united and
free with justice and freedom for all.
