[An Phoblacht]

Sinn Fein in United States

By Peadar Whelan

A strong Sinn Fein team led by party President Gerry Adams will be in the United States this coming week where they will attend a St Patrick's Day party in the White House hosted by US President Bill Clinton.

Martin McGuinness, the party's chief negotiator, will attend the New York St Patrick's Day parade. Also on the trip is the Sinn Fein Director of Publicity Rita O'Hare.

Both McGuinness and O'Hare are in the States already while Adams flies out on Thursday after his London meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Speaking to An Phoblacht Mairead Keane, head of Sinn Fein's office in Washington, said that Adams's first major engagement will be at Seton Hall University where an estimated 2,700 people will attend his talk.

Given the demand for tickets, the organisers are doing a simultaneous broadcast to another hall on the campus where up to another 5,000 people may hear Adams speak.

The Sinn Fein trio will, as part of their itinerary, meet with senior US politicians such as Ted Kennedy and Peter King as well as make appearances at various dinners and events organised by Friends of Sinn Fein.
