Wexford 1798 Commemoration

Pat Doherty represented Sinn Féin at the re-enacting of the 1798 Wexford Senate last week, organised to commemorate the bicentenial of the United Irishmen's rising.

Doherty, pictured here with 26 county President Mary McAleese, was presented with a ceremonial scroll, enrolling Gerry Adams, who could not attend, as a senator in the re-assembled institution. He also recieved a medal inscribed ``Senate Loch Garmáin - `Liberty, equality, fraternity''' (incidentally the same slogan as that backing the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis).

Commenting on the general theme of the event, Pat Doherty said there was much prominence bestowed to symbols of Pike Men; ``The culture of the people's commemoration was the culture of the pike men.''
