British Army incursion into Monaghan

Monaghan Sinn Féin Councillor Jackie Crowe described as a worrying development the incursion of two British Army Land Rovers into the Castleblaney area on Sunday 5 July.

Crowe said that both vehicles crossed the border from the Mountainy Road into the Mullyash area of the county. Eyewitnesses said they then travelled to McKelvey's Grove, on to the main Castleblaney/Keady Road, crossing back into the six counties at Tullinagrove. The Councillor revealed that one man who followed them claimed that they flashed lights and sounded horns as they travelled along. It was obvious to them that they had trespassed into the 26 counties from the many road signs on the way.

The Councillor said that with the tense climate in the north, it was a particularly provocative action and he has corresponded with the Minister for Foreign Affairs in relation to the incident.

Supporting his party colleague, SF TD Caoimhghín O Caoláin urged vigilance among communities throughout the border counties in line with growing tension in the north. He has also confirmed that he has lodged a complaint with the office of Minister David Andrews.
