Mowlam's parades farce
The attitude of the British government towards the
nationalist community in the Six Counties was exposed
once more by this week's appointments to the Parades
Commission.
The appointments effectively create a unionist
Commission for unionist marches and have been
described.as ``a joke'' and ``a farce'' by nationalist
residents' groups.
Disappointment among nationalists at the decision was
palpable, and it is seen as a clear sign that the
present British government is no different from
previous ones.
Among the appointments is Glen Barr, a former leading
member of the UDA who says he consulted with
paramilitary groups before accepting the position.
Also taking up a position is Apprentice Boy Tommy
Cheevers who has consistently refused to meet Concerned
Residents' groups.
Supposedly adding balance to this will be Catholic
solicitor Rose-Anne McCormick, a former member of the
Police Authority, and Aidan Canavan, a solicitor
working for the Police Federation.
gry at the annoucement the Lower Ormeau Road
Concerned Residents plan to take legal action over the
appointments.
