RUC found guilty of savage assault

A West Belfast man, assaulted by the RUC while in custody has been awarded £30,000 compensation in Belfast High Court.

39-year-old Davy Adams sustained a broken leg, two cracked ribs and other injuries during one of the most savage attacks by RUC officers in Castlereagh Interrogation Centre in recent years. The RUC claimed that the injuries sustained by Adams occurred during a ``murderous attack'' on an RUC officer. The judge dismissed the RUC's plea, on the ground that this was no excuse for assault.

Contradicting his own judgement, the presiding judge concluded the RUC had acted with ``courage and commitment''. Adams is serving a 25 year sentence for conspiring to kill a senior RUC man.

Sinn Féin prisons spokesperson Michael Browne asked ``Will those responsible now be disciplined or face criminal charges for this vicious beating?''
