New Sinn Fein office in South Derry

Sinn Fein's new constituency office in South Derry was officially opened last Saturday by Mid-Ulster MP Martin McGuinness. The new office located at Tirkane Road, Maghera was the home of IRA volunteer Jimmy Kelly before his death. Present at Saturday afternoon's opening ceremony were Sinn Fein Assembly members John Kelly and Francie Molloy and local councillors.

Before unveiling a plaque commissioned to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the United Irish rebellion of 1798 and declaring the office open, Martin McGuinness especially welcomed the representatives of the families of the area's republican dead to the event.

Amongst the family representatives were 90 year old Joe Hughes, father of H-Block Hunger Striker Francis Hughes, and Mary Davey, widow of murdered Sinn Fein councillor, John Davey as well as Neesy Kelly father of Volunteer Jimmy Kelly and Patricia McBride whose brother Antoine MacGiolla Bhride who was killed on active service in 1984.

In his short address, Martin McGuinness paid tribute to all party activists who have contributed to Sinn Fein's brilliant electoral performance in Mid-Ulster and who are now ensuring that the pledge of a first-class constituency service for the people of Mid-Ulster is honoured. He thanked all of those people who assisted in the opening of the office.

The new office will be open to the public from 10am to 2pm, Monday to Friday and staff can be contacted by telephoning 01648 - 45122.
