Parades Body blow

By Ned Kelly

The death knell must surely have been sounded over the Parades Commission following last week happenings when the commission's Preliminary Determination report was pulled after the intervention of British prime minister Tony Blair.

Within a day of Blair's intervention ex-UDA member Glen Barr and the Apprentice Boy's Tommy Cheevers had resigned.

Statutory legislation now comes into effect, meaning that the Parades Commission must give only five days notice of any decision it makes regarding a disputed parade with the operational role of the RUC still central to any decision.

Blair explained his intervention saying it was ``preferable to overloading the political system'' while Gerard Rice from LOCC warned in a statement, ``the days of believing that ignoring the feelings of the nationalist community as the least worst option are gone.''
