Castlewellan recruitment
Frank McDowell, Sinn Fein Councillor for South Down,
has accused the RUC of trying to recruit informers in
the Castlewellan area and advised nationalists not to
attend RUC barracks alone.
During trouble in Castlewellan on St Patrick's night an
RUC man was accused of having connections with a
leading Loyalist family, the LVF and complicity in the
murder of James Morgan.
According to McDowell, ``this same RUC man then visited
the homes of several young men and told them to attend
the Castlewellan RUC barracks or face arrest''. Once
there, a uniformed sergeant and a reserve RUC man
repeatedly asked about the allegations concerning the
loyalists and the links to the Morgan murder. The RUC
men also tried to coerce the young men to inform on
named Republicans in the Castlewellan area.
