Killing not an accident
Around 100 supporters of Scots Guardsmen Mark Wright
and Jim Fisher marched through Arbroath, Scotland last
Saturday calling for the pair to be released early from
Maghaberry jail.
Both British soldiers were found guilty of shooting 18
year old nationalist Peter McBride in the back while
they were on footpatrol in the New Lodge Road district
of North Belfast in September 1992.
Marking the birthday of Wright who was 28 this Tuesday
the yellow ribbon wearing protesters heard his parents
Isobel and Douglas describe McBride's murder as ``an
accident''. But Jean McBride said, ``there is no way my
son's killing could be described as `an accident', for
they chased Peter for three streets on a bright sunny
morning before they shot him.
``Peter had been body searched prior to this. They knelt
down, aimed and shot him a number of times before he
died. I can never share another birthday with my son
the way Guardsman Wright's parents can. He has never
shown any remorse and actually gave me the thumbs up
sign in court as he was being sentenced.''
