Derry and Antrim remember

HUNDREDS OF REPUBLICANS from Derry and Antrim gathered at Lavey, County Derry in bright autumn sunshine on Sunday 21 September to remember the republican dead of the counties.

They marched from St Mary's churchyard where Sinn Féin councillor John Davey, shot dead by loyalists in 1989, is buried.

The crowd, led by a lone piper and the Strabane Martyrs flute band, marched to Gulladuff where the commemoration ceremony, organised by the National Graves Association, was held.

John Kelly, Sinn Féin councillor in the Magherafelt council chaired the proceedings. Nuala O'Hagan, whose father Bernard O'Hagan was shot dead by a loyalist gunman in the grounds of Magherafelt college in 1991, six years ago, read the roll of honour.

The main speaker of the day was Sinn Féin's West Tyrone representative Barry McElduff who described the dead as "modern day heroes and heroines". McElduff went on to say that in memory of all those republicans who have died over the past 25 years, "we will do what it takes" to achieve a just and lasting settlement.
